Private blood collection by clinical request
The procedure for arranging a private blood test with us is as follows:
- GP, consultant, nutritionist or other clinician determines a blood test is required, completes, creates or requests a requisition form. The patient should have this as it provides necessary information for the test to proceed.
- When this is an electronic request, we have to gain permission to access information.
- Patient contacts Phlebotomy Services for appointment.
- Sample is taken and either delivered to local lab, or prepared for posting or courier collection.
- Patient contacts requesting person for results.
Private sample requests usually have packaging with forms, instructions and equipment enclosed.
Useful Tips:
- If you are cold your veins will be more difficult to find. Making sure you keep warm prior to your blood test will help to speed up the procedure.
- A fasting blood test means nothing to eat or drink, other than water, for 12 hours prior to the test and no alcohol for 24 hours before the test, unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Blood dumps
This is an increasingly popular request, especially in regards cases of haemochromatosis.
Haemochromatosis is an inherited condition where iron levels in the body slowly build up over many years.
This build-up of iron, known as iron overload, can cause unpleasant symptoms. If it is not treated, this can damage parts of the body such as the liver, joints, pancreas and heart.
Haemochromatosis most often affects people of white northern European background and is particularly common in countries where lots of people have a Celtic background, such as Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
The most commonly used treatment for haemochromatosis is a procedure to remove some of your blood, known as a phlebotomy or venesection.
We are able to assist with these requests. Contact us for further details.
For Venesection / Blood Dump a disclaimer is to be signed before the procedure
